“I already submitted it online, so just print it and drop it in the professor’s mailbox,” Shin Yoosung says, stopping at the crosswalk. Over the phone, Lee Gilyoung grunts in acknowledgment, and Yoosung hears the muffled sound of the printer starting. “Thanks for this.”
“Sure,” Gilyoung says. “You positive you’re feeling alright? The flu’s been going around.”
“I’m fine. Unlike someone, I regularly take the tablets Seolhwa unni gives us every year.” She can hear Gilyoung start to protest, so she barrels on: “I needed to stay home today, is all.” The pedestrian sign lights up, and she crosses the busy street quickly.
“Home, huh?”
Shin Yoosung pauses in front of the hospital, taking a breather after all that walking. From her apartment to the subway to pushing through the foot traffic leading to the hospital where her ahjussi rests.
There’s no anniversary, but Yoosung woke with an ache in her chest so terrible she knew that her responsibilities would be unbearable today. So, she climbs the too-familiar stairwell, replaces the wilted flowers in the vase, and settles in a chair next to Kim Dokja’s comatose form.
“I’ll leave a plate of dinner in the fridge for you.”
“Thanks, Gilyoung.”
